Kwara state government has expressed commitment towards wellbeing of the citizens, and total eradication of female genital mutilation in the state.
The Director Social Welfare, Kwara State Ministry of Social Development, Mr James Kayode stated this while speaking at a sensitisation programme organised by the state ministry of Social Development in collaboration with Global Hope for Women and Children Foundation (GLOHWOC) for men and women in Shao community in Moro local government area of Kwara state.
He called on the participants to see themselves as agent of change to end female genital mutilation (FGM ).
Mr Kayode said the state government will ensure adequate enforcement of the law on child rights act to protect the girl child from the archaic culture.
In his address the Ohoro of Shao Oba Job Atolagbe calls for periodic training of health workers to enable them contain the problem arising from female genital mutilation.
He said the traditional institution would continue to campaign against the harmful practice to save the girl child.
In her remarks, the Chief executive officer Global Hope for Women and Children Foundation (GLOHWOC), Dr Christy Abayomi said the use of unsterilised materials for cutting the Female expose the victims to all kinds of infections.
She noted that female genital mutilation can cause death resulting from uncontrollable bleeding by victims and serious health hazards.
For his part former Director National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kwara state Directorate, Mr Segun Adeyemi admonished the participants to see themselves as agent of change in their various communities.
He also urged the traditional institution to stand firm in ensuring the practice of female genital mutilation is eradicated in their domain.
