Journalists in Katsina State have been urged to embrace developmental journalism in their reportage as a way of strengthening democracy and promoting sustainable growth in the region.
This call was made at a one-day public lecture organized by the Katsina State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), with the theme “Democracy and Developmental Journalism: A Case Study of Northern Nigeria.”
The lecture formed part of activities marking the 38th anniversary of the creation of Katsina State.
Speaking at the event, Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, acknowledged the vital role journalists play in advancing the state’s development
He commended the NUJ for organizing the event in honor of the state’s anniversary.
Also delivering his remarks, the National President of the NUJ, Dr. Alhasan Yahya Abdullahi, congratulated the people of Katsina on the anniversary.
He assured that under his leadership, the union will continue to prioritize the welfare and professional growth of journalists across the country.
The Chairman of the occasion, Waziri Ilimin Kasar Hausa, Professor Sani Abubakar Lugga, stressed the need for journalists to contribute towards addressing the security challenges confronting parts of the state.
In a goodwill message, the Kanwan Katsina, District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, thanked the NUJ national leadership for honoring him with an award during the union’s 70th anniversary celebration in Abuja.
Earlier in his address, the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Tukur Hassan Dan Ali, explained that the public lecture was part of the union’s efforts to celebrate Katsina at 38 and to highlight the role of the media in promoting peace and development.
The lecture also featured a paper presentation by Dr. Bashir Usman Ruwan Godiya, titled “Democracy and Developmental Journalism in Katsina State.”
