“A painful national loss of dedicated professionals who stood for truth and service to society”
Katsina State Governor and Chairman of the Northwest Governors’ Forum, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has expressed profound grief over the tragic road accident in Gombe State that resulted in the death of seven journalists in a crash that occurred along the Yola–Kumo Road, near the Billiri axis.
Governor Radda described the tragedy as “heart-rending and deeply devastating,” involving patriotic professionals who committed their lives to informing the public and safeguarding the values of truth, justice, and accountability.
He noted that the crash led to the loss of precious lives and injuries to others, plunging the media fraternity, associates, and families of the victims into mourning.
According to him, “each life lost in this unfortunate incident represents a silenced voice of truth and a family bearing immeasurable sorrow.”
The Governor emphasized that journalists remain central to democratic growth, public enlightenment, and the promotion of transparency in governance.
Governor Radda further stated that incidents of this nature are painful reminders of the risks journalists encounter while discharging their duties, underscoring the need for sustained support for their safety and welfare.
He called on authorities and stakeholders to continue improving safety measures for media professionals, urging stronger commitment to protecting those who work daily to inform and educate the nation.
He added that “this moment reminds us that journalists do not only tell stories — they often risk their lives so that society may know the truth, and we all owe them greater protection, respect, and support.”
The Governor urged Nigerians to stand in solidarity with the media community during this difficult time, emphasizing unity, empathy, and collective support in moments of national grief.
He reaffirmed his deep respect for the journalism profession and praised the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the deceased journalists, noting that they served the nation with honour and integrity.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Katsina State,” Governor Radda extended condolences to the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Government and people of Gombe State, the bereaved families, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the entire media industry across Nigeria.
He prayed that Almighty Allah forgive the departed, grant them eternal rest, console their families, and grant quick recovery to those who sustained injuries.
