Erecting structures and blockage on water ways have been identified as some major causes of flooding.
This is part of the issue discussed by experts at the stakeholders engagement on management of erosion, watershed, flood and storm water sensitization workshop in Daura zone organized by katsina State erosion and watershed management Agency KEWMA.
The participants at the engagement were drawn from Daura, Maiadua, Sandamu and Zango local government areas.
Addressing the participants the Director general of katsina State erosion and watershed management Agency Alhaji Mannir Ayuba Sullubawa stressed the importance of the stakeholders in addressing erosion, flooding and other ecological challenges.
Alhaji Mannir Ayuba Sullubawa said the engagement is in line with the current state administration of Malam DIKKO Umar Raddah’s concern for the well-being of people especially on environmental protection
The Director General explained that the meeting was meant to identify the communities facing some environmental challenges and the flood front areas with a view to preparing a report for government intervention.
Alhaji Mannir Ayuba Sullubawa emphasized the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure habitable environment for sustainable development.
The KEWMA Director General called on the participants to provide accurate information on any ecological challenges facing their communities to achieve the desired success.
Alhaji Mannir Ayuba Sullubawa appreciated the katsina State House of Assembly for enacting law establishing the agency as well as the support and cooperation being accorded them by the supervising commissioner Alhaji Hamza Sulaiman Faskari.
The chairman of Daura local government, Alhaji Bala Musa and his Sandamu and Maiadua counterparts highlighted the relevance of the engagement towards addressing the erosion and yearly flooding being experienced in some communities and promised to accord them all the necessary support to achieve the desired success
The Sarkin Maskan katsina district head of Funtua Alhaji Sambo Idris Sambo appreciated the foresight of the state government for the engagement and called for more concerted effort to ensure sustainable development.
During the program the representatives of the Ministry of Lands and Physically Planning SEMA, NASAREA and Ministry of Health sensitized the participants on how best to manage and control erosion and flooding and lauded the foresight of KEWMA management for the engagement.
Highlights of the event were lecture presentations by professor Hamisu Ibrahim from Umaru Musa Yar’adua university on the effects and management of flooding while Dr Muktar Balarabe a registra with Muhammad Buhari Metrological Institute of Science and Technology delivered lectures on the Effects and Management of Erosion.
The participants of the engagement include traditional rulers, community leaders, the Directors of education and social services and that of water and sanitation among others.
