- Transmission capacity rises from 5–6 to 18 hours daily — GM Bakori
Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has commissioned a solar renewable energy facility at Aminu Abdullahi House, the headquarters of the Katsina State Radio Service (KTRS), as part of efforts to strengthen information dissemination and reduce energy costs across public institutions.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by the General Manager of the station, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy, the Commissioner for Information, senior government officials, staff of the radio service, and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, Governor Radda said the project would provide the station with an independent and reliable power supply, ensuring improved broadcasting services for the people of Katsina State.
“We are here today to commission this solar renewable energy facility at Aminu Abdullahi House, Katsina Radio Station. This project will provide the station with an independent power supply, enabling it to operate for up to 24 hours, if necessary,” the Governor said.
“With this facility, we believe the station’s reliance on diesel and the cost of energy from the national grid will be drastically reduced. This will ensure more efficient and reliable broadcasting for the benefit of the people of Katsina State.”
He expressed hope that the project would enhance information delivery across the state and further strengthen the media sector.
“We hope and pray that this project will serve the station well and contribute to better information delivery across the state. In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, I hereby commission this project,” the Governor added.
Earlier, the General Manager of the Katsina State Radio Service, Mallam Lawal Attahiru Bakori, described the commissioning as a significant milestone in the history of the station, which has served the state for several decades.
“For several decades, by the grace of God, this station has continued to serve the people, and we are proud of the developments we are witnessing today,” he said.
“It may interest you to know that before this moment, the station could only transmit for about five to six hours daily. However, with this new development, we will now be able to transmit for up to 18 hours continuously, by the grace of God. This is a major improvement for us.”
He noted that the solar installation was part of a broader upgrade project at the station, with additional components nearing completion.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ahmed, commended the Governor for approving the project, noting that it would significantly enhance the station’s operations.
“Your Excellency, we sincerely appreciate your kind gesture in approving and installing this power system for the state radio, as well as additional substations across the state. This intervention will significantly improve the station’s performance, enabling it to remain on air for about 18 hours daily,” he said.
Dr. Ahmed explained that the facility forms part of the administration’s broader solar energy interventions across key sectors in the state.
“The project here at the radio station forms part of the information sector interventions. With this installation, the station can operate for up to 24 hours if required. The solar system has a capacity of 100 kilowatt-peak, supported by a 120 kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system, which will provide reliable and uninterrupted power,” he added.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, expressed appreciation to the Governor for approving the project and other related power interventions.
“We extend our appreciation for your kind gesture in installing this power system for the state radio, as well as additional substations. As the General Manager rightly stated, this will definitely improve their performance, as they will now be on air for about 18 hours daily. We sincerely appreciate this support,” he said.
The event was attended by the General Manager of Katsina State Television (KTTV), Abba Zayyan; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Comrade Tukur Hassan Dan Ali; and other top government officials.
