Governor Radda Distributes Relief Items to 1,994 Victims of 2025 Floods Across Katsina State

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has distributed food items, non-food materials, and building supplies to victims of the 2025 floods.

The event, held today at the Old Government House, Katsina, targeted 1,500 vulnerable persons and 494 identified individual flood victims across all 25 Local Government Areas. The distribution was coordinated by the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) under the leadership of Hajiya Binta Hussaini Dangani.

In his address, Governor Radda described the 2025 floods as a devastating calamity that affected all 34 Local Government Areas, destroying homes, submerging farmlands, disrupting livelihoods, and displacing families.

“For over one thousand five hundred vulnerable persons and four hundred and ninety-four identified victims, the disaster was not an abstract event; it was a personal experience of loss, uncertainty, and hardship,” the Governor said.

“The suffering of our people must never be treated as statistics. It must be met with presence, empathy, and action. This is the purpose of today’s flag-off.”

Governor Radda emphasized coordination, transparency, and compassion as guiding principles of the relief efforts.

“This intervention is not the end of our responsibility. Beyond relief distribution, our administration is strengthening disaster preparedness and mitigation measures. We are investing in improved drainage systems, environmental management, early warning mechanisms, and community awareness to reduce the impact of future floods,” he added.

He also urged beneficiaries to use the relief items responsibly to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods, and regain stability in their families.

“Katsina State is defined by resilience, faith, and unity. This ceremony should mark a turning point from loss to recovery, from despair to renewed hope,” Governor Radda said.

“Under this administration, no community will be abandoned in times of crisis. Leadership is measured not by promises, but by how it responds when people are most vulnerable.”

Earlier, Hajiya Binta Hussaini Dangani, Executive Secretary of SEMA, outlined the scope of the relief distribution.

She said each of the 25 Local Government Areas affected by the 2025 floods would receive 200 bags of cement and 40 bundles of iron sheets for victims. Meanwhile, 494 individual beneficiaries would each receive 3 bags of cement and 1 bundle of iron sheets.

In addition, 1,500 vulnerable persons — including widows, orphans, the less privileged, and destitute — will receive food and non-food items. Four institutions — the Orphanage Home, Children’s Remand Home, Correctional Home, and Psychiatric Hospital — will also receive support, particularly in preparation for Ramadan.

Hajiya Dangani highlighted past interventions, noting that in 2023, 2,024 flood victims received building materials; in 2024, 1,064 victims received ₦451.8 million in cash assistance, while 3,196 victims received building materials.

She added that SEMA has also supported victims of floods, thunderstorms, electrocution, banditry, and provided cash aid to fire disaster victims twice in the past year.

She cautioned the public against practices that worsen flooding, including dumping waste in waterways and using substandard building materials, and urged communities to follow public safety measures.

Dangani emphasized ongoing awareness campaigns via radio, television, and online platforms, calling on Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) to intensify grassroots education on early warnings, disaster prevention, and response strategies.

“We remain grateful for the continuous support and prompt release of funds by Governor Radda, which enable SEMA to execute its humanitarian mandate efficiently,” she concluded.

The event was attended by local government chairmen, the Chairman of the House Committee on Women’s Affairs, Hon. Albaba, members of the Katsina State Executive Council, traditional title holders, and business community leaders.
