The devastation inflicted on traders by the recent blaze at Kara Timber Market in Birnin Kebbi has left many without hope. The losses are estimated to approach N200 million, plunging affected merchants into despair. The fire broke out unexpectedly in the early hours of Sunday June 8, 2025, quickly spreading through numerous stalls and shades. Local residents and traders promptly alerted the Fire Service, which responded swiftly; however, as many as 9 well stocked shades had already been consumed by the flames. Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading further, successfully containing the damage to the initial areas.

In the aftermath, Kebbi’s Deputy Governor Senator Abubakar Umar Tafida serving as acting governor, immediately visited the scene. He expressed sympathy for the victims and responded by donating N10 million as temporary relief, pending the government’s decision on further assistance. Concerns arose over the long-term impact on the livelihoods of those affected, many of whom face potential permanent business closures.

Governor Nasir Idris, who was on pilgrimage at the time of the incident, was visibly distressed after returning and personally visited the scene to assess the destruction. His visit underscored his deep empathy and concern for his people. Known for his longstanding compassion towards Kebbi’s less privileged long before becoming Governor, Idris’s roots in grassroots advocacy have shaped his leadership style. His genuine connection with ordinary citizens was a decisive factor in his election, and he remains committed to their welfare.

During his visit to Kara Timber Market today, Governor Idris announced a generous government donation of N50 million and a personal donation of N10 Million to help victims recover and reestablish their livelihoods. He urged traders across Kebbi’s markets to adopt better safety measures to prevent future tragedies and assured that his administration will continue to stand by its people in times of need. The governor emphasized that the assistance rendered aims to sustain the businesses, support economic growth, and guarantee the steady supply of essential goods, contributing to the state’s prosperity.

Alhaji Bello Dansabo, Chairman of the Timber Sellers Association, has an earlier expressed gratitude for the swift intervention and substantial aid. He praised the governor’s compassionate response, which alleviated fears of permanent ruin among the traders. He assured that the assistance would be distributed fairly among all victims, emphasizing unity and resilience within the community. He recalled the unprecedented development that has been achieved under two years pointing out that from the way the Governor is going, Kebbi will see more development.

He pledged the unalloyed support of the market community to the state government.

The day’s events saw the Kara Market community rally in support of their leader. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as the market residents cheered and waved at the governor’s convoy, demonstrating their unwavering loyalty and appreciation for his responsiveness and commitment to their well-being.
It has always been the habit of Dr Idris to place the interest and welfare of his people far above any other consideration and this emphatic is a further manifestation and proof of this pro-people mindset.
