The Civic Nest Initiative for Community Development and Empowerment, in collaboration with the Citizen Participation Against Corruption Initiative, organized an inter-school debate competition to commemorate Nigeria’s June 12 Democracy Day.
The debate session was held at the Assembly Hall of Family Support Programme School, Katsina, under the theme: “Democracy is the Best System of Government.” Three secondary schools participated in the competition.
The participating schools were Government Day Secondary School Kofar Yandaka, Family Support Programme Secondary School Katsina, and Adosa Community Secondary School Katsina.
Speaking during the event, the Executive Director of Civic Nest Initiative, Comrade Yahaya Saidu Lugga, stated that June 12 has become Nigeria’s official Democracy Day and emphasized the importance of joining other Nigerians in celebrating the occasion with students, who are regarded as the leaders of tomorrow, while discussing Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director of the Citizens Participation Against Corruption Initiative, Comrade Bashir Dauda Sabuwar Unguwa, highlighted the historical background of June 12, explaining that it originated from the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria’s history.
Other speakers at the event included the Public Relations Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Katsina State Office, Malam Aliyu Adosa, as well as principals of the participating schools, who appreciated the organizers for their foresight in organizing the debate competition.
At the end of the competition, Government Day Senior Secondary School Kofar Yandaka emerged as the winner, while Family Support Programme Secondary School Katsina secured second position and Adosa Community Secondary School Katsina came third.
